Acne Myths

There are many myths about acne. Here are a few of them:

Myth: Acne is caused by poor hygiene. Reality: If you fall victim to this myth and find yourself washing as often and as hard as you can, you can actually be making your acne worse.

Myth: Acne is just a cosmetic disease. Reality: yes, acne does affect the way people look, and is not otherwise a serious threat to a person’s physical health, however, acne can result in permanent physical scarring.

Myth: You just have to let acne run its course. Reality: The truth is acne can be cleared up.

Myth: Only teens get acne. Reality: Acne generally begins in the early teen years and subsides in the late teens to mid 20’s, but many people develop acne late in that cycle or even late in their 20’s and 30’s.

Myth: Acne is caused by diet. Reality: Although this is a controversial topic, the prevention, control and treatment of acne can be greatly helped by eating the proper foods and maintaining a balanced diet.

Myth: If the celebrities are using it … it must be true! Reality: If for one second, you believe that supermodels and famous people are providing their name and their services to the leading competitors of the skin care world for nothing -- think again!

Skincare Alternatives for Acne: Homeopathic Skin Care

Though the cause of acne is largely unknown, stress and diet have been implicated in wrecking blemish havoc on clear skin. Skincare-News.com's latest article, "Unveiling Clear Skin the Natural Way," explains that although research has yet to confirm these theories, many proponents of yoga and alternative skin treatments recommend a change in diet and a reduction in stress for beautiful glowing skin.

We are what we eat, and whatever we put into our bodies is definitely going to show. Processed foods are one such example. Dr. Nicholas Perricone -- dermatologist and author -- recommends eating healthy fats, such as Brazil nuts, olive oil, flaxseed and omega 3 fatty acids, which can be found in salmon or other fatty fish (e.g., halibut, shellfish and trout) and can clear toxins from the body. He also views sugar as a major adversary in the fight for beautiful skin and claims that sugar contributes to saggy skin, so the key to beautiful skin, he says, is in controlling your glucose and insulin levels. He also recommends eating cherries, apples and any kind of berries. Say no to grapes, oranges, papayas, and watermelon. Yoga is known for its health and wellness benefits.

All and all, there are many theories and natural treatments out there, just make sure to distinguish the good from the quacks.
